The Department of Government and Legal Studies coordinates three major programmes, namely International Relations and Diplomacy, Criminology and Legal Studies, and Disaster Management. The Department approaches the study of Government and Legal Studies from a multidisciplinary perspective with special focus on advancing knowledge in aspects of government and legal studies. It employs a variety of methods including discourse analysis, and comparative and historical analysis.
The International Relations and Diplomacy programme is a multidisciplinary field of study at both the Diploma and Bachelors levels, that gives students a broad exposure to international affairs and explores the interrelationships among the world’s primary political institutions. It is designed to produce graduates with skills to satisfy the needs of the real world, thereby developing international affairs professionals who understand complex transnational issues. It is structured to provide students with training in the conceptual and theoretical debates within international relations, and includes awareness of a comprehensive range of approaches relevant to the study of global politics.
The Disaster Management programme offers foundational courses in disaster management operations. The programme is meant to prepare students for further studies in disaster management by equipping them with knowledge, and enhancing their basic disaster response capacities. The curriculum emphasizes practical and technical skills to compliment theory, and to enhance their analytical capacities. It also offers managerial skills, which include technical, human, conceptual, diagnostic and prognostic skills. The graduates join the labour market as disaster managers, community development workers, humanitarian aid volunteers, security personnel, consultants, policy makers and scholars in the discipline.
The Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and Security Management is designed to provide a comprehensive (holistic) understanding of the concept, theory, principles and methods specific to the discipline of criminology and security management. A theoretical approach and a practical application of law, sociology and psychology, security management are integral parts of the programme. The degree is designed to produce graduates who demonstrate profound knowledge of, and the right skills and positive attitude towards crime and security management. The programme will provide opportunity for individuals; serving officers or civilians an opportunity to advance their skills, Knowledge and improve their capacity in criminology and security matters in order to address the needs of emerging crime and security trends. As such, the programme is expected to complement and sustain professionalism in law enforcement public and private security, Judicial System and Correctional Services in Kenya and the world.

In turn, the Diploma in Criminology and Security Management draws on leading National Crime and Research Centre outputs to enlighten on crime and its control, to provide a solid grounding in the discipline of criminology, theoretical approaches and related aspects of law, sociology and psychology, security management. Comprising studies on anti-social behaviour, insecurity, drug use, war crimes and terrorism, the uniquely tailored units allow learners to focus on own specific interests and career ambitions, and to understand the nature of crime, its causes and its prevention by the Criminal Justice Agencies, even as Security Management fosters intellectual approaches. Consequently, the Diploma graduates will be able to play their role in the nation’s economic growth and development.

The Diploma in Legal Studies is designed for students with an interest in their general knowledge of the basic concepts of law, with a view to pursuing a career in diverse fields of law, business and institutional management. It is geared towards preparing graduates from non-legal backgrounds, including individuals whose work requires legal and judicial knowledge, but who have no professional training. The programme incorporates technology, social sciences, management and legal factors with the scope ranging from, but not limited to, knowledge in: law and legal systems, including the administration of justice, business law, civil and criminal procedure, evidence, alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, public law, including immigration and human rights law, constitutional law and private law, including torts, contracts and property. It further offers exposure to legal research skills, legal remedies and the basic principles of legal reasoning
